This invention is related to an improved breakerless ignition coil for an engine having a vacuum interrupter for example as in a conventional automobile.
Vacuum interrupters for use in combination with conventional breakerless ignition coils are known. Typically, the vacuum interrupter is disposed in a housing that surrounds the secondary winding of the ignition coil and is fixed in position on the coil. The vacuum interrupter includes a body in the form of a circular plate having a central opening that is closed by a resilient diaphragm. A compression plate is secured to the diaphragm and is disposed in the opening in the plate. A first end of the diaphragm is secured to the compression plate, while a second end is secured to the housing. The diaphragm is fixedly held in the central opening, and it is pressure balanced against the compression plate.
A first electrode is positioned on the compression plate and is electrically connected to the coil. The electrode is connected to the coil by an electrical lead that extends through an opening in the housing. The electrode is spaced from the second end of the diaphragm and provides a spark gap between the diaphragm and the electrode.
A second electrode is positioned on the compression plate, and a first terminal of the second electrode is electrically connected to a high voltage source. A second terminal of the second electrode is positioned in the housing and is spaced from the first end of the diaphragm. The second electrode extends through an opening in the housing, and it is aligned with the electrode. The second electrode provides a spark gap between the housing and the second end of the diaphragm.
The diaphragm has a ac619d1d87
